J. Michael Ginney, Photographer

Jim’s career began in the 1960s when he studied painting, drawing, graphics and photography at several colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area. He had the good fortune to work with many excellent teachers, and during this time he began to realize that photography was his main interest. And so he began 30 years of work in the field of fine art photography. For several years he worked in the graphic arts department of IBM. Later, he focused on his fine art photography during five years of concentrated travel throughout the West, photographing and showing in many parts of the country. For four winters he worked as a photographer in residence at Death Valley National Monument. During the summers he photographed and taught in locations from Sun Valley north to Alaska.

In the early 1980s he opened a successful commercial and fine art photography business, Fotographics, which he later moved to Placerville. Here, he expanded his business to include framing. The business is located at 415 Placerville Drive, Suite V. In the early 1990s, his interests expanded to include digital imaging. Jim currently teaches digital imaging at Cosumnes River College, El Dorado Center. He also has led university and independently sponsored workshops in various parts of the West. His work is internationally known and is in a number of museums and private collections. Recently his work was honored by being chosen as part of a collection of western photography that was featured for two years in major U.S. embassies.
