| An Italian chocolate maker named Domingo (also known as Domenico) Ghirardelli came to California via South America. Ghirardelli had owned a store next to James Lick’s piano factory in Lima. Ghirardelli tried mining, storekeeping, owning a hotel and running a restaurant before returning to making candy that even today has a wide-ranging reputation for its high quality. |
