| One of the oldest, richest and largest hardrock mines in the United States, the Empire Mine is today a 740-acre state park. The mine featured 367 miles of underground passages and had a vertical drop of more than 5,000 feet, well below sea level.

| The so-called "cottage" of mine owner William Bourn, Jr. was built of stone from mine tailings. The lavish mansion is set on several beautifully landscaped acres, complete with fountains, reflecting pool and rose gardens. Fall colors here are spectacular. | |||||||||||||||||
